The community of Albania, a municipality located in the south of the department of Caquetá, is dismayed after learning of the  strange death of an eight-year-old boy.

According to initial reports, the minor, identified as  Arlex Perdomo Rojas , died on Friday, February 14, after arriving home, overheated from playing in the street, entering his home, going to the refrigerator and drinking a glass of water.

This would have caused the child to develop  heat stroke , since, after consuming this cold drink, minutes later  his health began to deteriorate.

Local media reported that although the boy was taken to a medical center,  life-saving efforts were unsuccessful, and he died.
Authorities are conducting the respective investigations to determine the causes of Arlex’s death, after engaging in an activity that any child would want to be doing.

The school Arlex attended expressed his condolences.

The Albania Educational Institution issued a statement expressing that Arlex’s death “leaves an immense void, but  his legacy of love and enthusiasm will remain in our hearts.”
The minor was in third grade, where he taught his classmates, friends, and teachers the  “value of every moment.”
“We send a hug of strength and resilience to his entire family as they face this difficult time,” the statement reads.

Albania’s Mayor’s Office spoke out on the matter

The child’s death has caused shock throughout the municipality of Albania. Therefore, the Mayor’s Office decided to send a message to his family.
“ With profound sadness, we offer our prayers for the soul of Arlex Perdomo Rojas . His passing leaves a huge void in our hearts, but his legacy will live forever in our memories. We are with his family and friends in this difficult time, extending our most sincere condolences,” the Mayor’s Office wrote.

Heat stroke: a medical emergency

Heat stroke is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that can occur as a result of  prolonged exposure to high temperatures , especially when undergoing intense physical exertion in extreme heat.

Residents of the municipality of Albania, located in Caquetá, are still in shock over the death of 8-year-old Arlex Perdomo Rojas. According to media outlets such as  La Jornada  and  La Voz del Pueblo , the child was a third-grade student at the Albania school, and preliminary reports indicate that he suffered a seizure after returning home from playing outdoors and drinking ice-cold water. Despite the efforts of his family and medical staff, the child did not survive.

According to local press reports, the incident occurred on February 14, 2025, when  the minor, after arriving home feeling overheated, went to the refrigerator to drink cold water . Shortly after, his condition deteriorated, and despite being transferred to a medical center, attempts to save his life were unsuccessful.

Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of death, while media outlets reported that sudden temperature changes can have serious effects on the body, especially in children and vulnerable individuals. The school he attended issued a statement on social media expressing its grief over the loss of one of its students: “ His passing leaves us with an immense void, but his legacy of love and enthusiasm will remain in our hearts .”

The news of the minor’s death spread quickly through social media, sparking a wave of messages of solidarity for the child’s family. Even  the Mayor’s Office of Albania also expressed condolences , extending support to the family in this difficult time: “God welcomes an angel in heaven. From the Mayor’s Office of Albania Caquetá, headed by Mayor Carlos Alban Quintero Trujillo, we deeply regret the passing of the child Arlex Perdomo Rojas.”

Although authorities have not confirmed the exact cause of death, initial reports suggest that the child may have suffered heat shock due to the sudden change in temperature when consuming cold water after being exposed to heat. This type of situation can cause sudden vasodilation, affecting blood flow to vital organs such as the brain and heart.

” The body needs time to adapt to the transition from heat to cold. Otherwise, heat shock can occur , causing fatal consequences,” explained a health professional, quoted in the newspaper  La Jornada . For this reason, citizens are advised to take precautions, especially in hot climates, to avoid exposing their bodies to extreme temperature changes.

According to statements from relatives, the boy had been playing outdoors before returning home. Upon entering, he went straight to the kitchen to open the refrigerator and drink cold water, seeking relief from the heat. Shortly after, he began to show symptoms of decompensation, prompting his loved ones to act immediately and take him to a medical center, where specialists were unable to save his life.

In response to the child’s loss, neighbors, friends, and classmates have expressed their sadness and solidarity with Arlex’s family. Furthermore, the case has once again raised  concerns about the risks associated with sudden changes in temperature , especially in regions where high temperatures are common.
